BOOKS BY PAUL KELSO
Dallas-raised Paul Kelso’s training articles have appeared in iron-game magazines
like Powerlifting USA, Iron Man, Muscular Development, Hardgainer and others
since 1984. His reports from Asia of IPF Asian and World events introduced
overseas lifting stars to American readers.
Best known for compiling and developing variations of the Shrug Principle
and for his pioneer articles about the use of the “Trap Bar” or other parallel-grip
bars, Kelso is also author of two books unique in the iron world.
---------
KELSO’S SHRUG BOOK: Hats Off Books, 2002. Contains descriptions of
thirty variations of the “shrug” and their applications to powerlifting,
weightlifting and bodybuilding. Greatly expanded from earlier works and presents
27 drawings and photos to illustrate the exercises. New movements are included
with chapters specific to Bench Press stability and improving the pull for
deadlifting and weightlifting. Also chapters on “trap bar” training and the
ribcage expansion controversy explored.
As Dave Maurice said in his review on www.Cyberpump.com
, ”… no other book has such treatment of this material, and many of the movements
appear nowhere else.”

POWERLIFTING BASICS: TEXAS-STYLE: Iron Mind Enterprises, Inc.,
1996.
The funniest book ever written in powerlifting, this unique “training novel”
features the adventures of Lope – as in antelope – Delk, Preacher Harley,
The Club Hardhead and the succulent LaVonda Sue as they help the long-suffering
Coach cobble together a PL club at Piney Woods College in East Texas.
Called “an iron classic” by Steve Holman, editor of Iron Man magazine, the
training info aims at beginning and intermediate powerlifters with lots of
advice on what not to do when starting a PL club. This tale of Texas madness
also includes general training for folk just wanting to be bigger and stronger,
and the history of the fabled Stretchmark Machine. Veterans will love this
book because they’ve been through it all.
